Information about GLASGOW Perhaps more than any other city in the British Isles, Glasgow’s character is defined by that of its citizens. Forthright, brave, dignified and with great community spirit, they have experienced all that the changing times could throw at them and have remained true to many of their values and beliefs. Glasgow has always been proud of its predominantly working class nature Its Peoples Palace is a wonderful exhibition of paintings, prints and photographs, displayed alongside a wealth of historic artefacts, film and computer interactives, all showing the social history of the city. Glasgow grew up around Glasgow Cathedral founded by Saint Mungo in the 6th century. A grand example of pre-Reformation Gothic architecture, it is the only mainland Scottish cathedral to have survived the Reformation In the 18th century, much of the tobacco trade between Europe and the USA was routed through Glasgow and provided a great source of wealth for the city. Other New World imports included rum and sugar. Even after the tobacco trade declined in the 19th century, the city continued to prosper as a centre of textile manufacturing, shipbuilding and the coal and steel industries. Grand Victorian public buildings were constructed, and some of the wealthier citizens spent their fortunes amassing the large art collections, which now form the basis of the city's superb galleries. Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum was opened in 1902 and this grand Victorian cathedral of culture has an excellent collection of Scottish and European art. the Burrell Collection, was amassed by wealthy industrialist Sir William Burrell before it was donated to the city. It's now housed in a prize-winning museum in the Pollok Country Park. This collection includes everything from Chinese porcelain and medieval furniture to paintings by Renoir and Cézanne. Annual celebrations include the Celtic Connections music festival. February sees the City of Love, a festival celebrating St Valentine, whose partial remains lie in a Glasgow church Its most famous son was Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the architect and designer. Mackintosh's greatest building, the Glasgow School of Art, still houses the educational institution and the library, designed as an addition in 1907, is a masterpiece.
